The local Broome County  observatory is offering a preview of the Great American Solar Eclipse, preparing people in the region for the darkening of the sun this month.

Kopernik Observatory and Science Center is also hosting a Perseid Meteor Festival over the weekend.  Local performers and vendors are celebrating the meteor show.

The shower is expected to show 50 or more meteors per hour at the peak.

The Perseid shower happens yearly from July 17 to August 24 and this year’s peak is August 12 with the best viewing tomorrow after midnight at the dark skies of the observatory on Underwood Road in Vestal.
