Senior citizens in the Binghamton area are celebrating a birthday.

It’s not your typical story about marking the birth of a centenarian, but is actually celebrating the 51st anniversary of Medicare.

Citizen Action of New York says the passage of the program in 1965 was a milestone in providing affordable health care to seniors.

The “celebration” at the Woodburn Court One community room is politically motivated with Amy Fleming of Citizen Action saying some members of Congress proposing to turn Medicare into a private voucher program and raising the age of eligibility to 67.

Citizen Action, the New York State Alliance for Retired Americans and Statewide Senior Action Council would like to eliminate restrictions on negotiating drug prices and expand coverage to dental care, eyeglasses and hearing services.
