New York State Police are warning residents and businesses in Central New York that several businesses in the Oneonta area have been tricked into taking almost worthless Norfed Liberty Dollar medallions.  The problem with the trinkets is: medallions are not associated in any way with the U.S. Government, the U.S. Mint and are not legal tender.

The medallions look like $10 and $20 coins and are inscribed with words like "Trust In God" (not "In God We Trust"), "Liberty" and "Dollars".

The silver medallions are only worth the value of the silver they are made of or whatever a collector is willing to pay for them.

Store clerks and residents should be wary and should not accept the medallions as real currency.
