Area emergency services officials agree it is a miracle there were no deaths in a massive crash on State Route 17 east, just before the Front Street Exit in Binghamton August 25.

A total of ten vehicles were involved, including a tractor trailer that pinned a pickup truck against a construction barrier in the Prospect Mountain work zone at around 4:20 p.m.

Ten people were taken to area hospitals, some with serious injuries. But police and fire officials say none of the injuries appeared life-threatening.

One woman was pulled from her car by a construction worker and a retired police officer just before the vehicle burst into flames.

Traffic was backed up, not only on Route 17 but also on alternate routes like 434, Main Street and even Riverside Drive as a result of the crash.

One lane of the highway was reopened by about 7:15 p.m. with all eastbound lanes restored at around 10 p.m.

Accounts by authorities into a possible cause include that the tractor trailer was speeding through the work zone to another motorist cutting off the flat-bed.
