New York State Police say a man is in custody after trying to elude authorities by falling or jumping into the Susquehanna River in Endwell.

Emergency crews were dispatched to River Road shortly before 10:30 p.m. May 7 to locate a man swimming toward Owego.

Authorities say 31 year old Matthew Barrows got out of the river about an hour later and was found hiding behind a tree off River Road and the water rescue operation was terminated.

Barrows was taken to the hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Troopers say Barrows ran a red light at Hooper Road and Main Street, didn't stop for police and drove to River Road where he stopped his vehicle, got out and began running from police along the river when he entered the water.

Barrows is charged with fleeing police and driving with a suspended license.

He was sent to the Broome County Jail on $1,000 bail.
