Delaware County Sheriff’s officials are charging a Smyrna man for violating the New York State ban on burning for allegedly leaving an open fire unattended in the Town of Meredith.

Deputies say they saw smoke coming from behind a barn off Elk Creek Road and found two burning piles of wood and debris with no one around.

The East Meredith Fire Department was called in to put the fires out.

45 year old Richard Guiles was ticketed under Environmental Conservation Law for leaving a fire unattended and misdemeanor violating the New York State burn ban.

He was ordered to appear in Town of Meredith Court at a later date.
