Authorities say 29-year-old Brandon Birch of Harpursville has been charged with third-degree attempted robbery.

According to New York State Police, Birch is suspected in an incident that happened at the Express Mart store at 16 North Road around 10 p.m. Friday.

Investigators say a man handed a note to a clerk directing her to give him the store's cash. The woman and another clerk moved to the rear area of the business and the would-be robber left empty-handed.

Police say Birch, in addition to being a suspect in the attempted robbery, was wanted on an active parole warrant. He allegedly had violated conditions of his parole on a conviction of criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Birch was arraigned in Windsor town court and sent to Broome County Jail without bail.
