Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial is being spared a larger fine from federal prosecutors since staff at the Binghamton hospital self-reported improper billing to Medicare for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York, Richard Hartunian says Lourdes has paid $3,373,898.28 to resolve the False Claims Act liability from overcharges between February 2008 to September 2013.

The 242 bed hospital has also taken corrective steps to remedy the problem.

Prosecutors say, due in large part to Lourdes' decision to self-disclose the issues and cooperate through the government investigation, the Riverside Drive hospital is being required to pay far less than the treble damages and penalties the court is authorized to seek under the False Claims Act.
