A Cortland man is charged with aggravated drunk driving after his vehicle damaged by a tire that came off another vehicle traveling on Route 215 in the Town of Virgil at 6:19 p.m. May 27.

Sheriff’s Deputies say 51 year old Roger Simpson, also of Cortland, was driving north when his front, driver’s-side tire came off, rolled into the oncoming lane, and hit a Ford Explorer driven by 39 year old Steven Campbell.

In spite of heavy damage, Campbell kept driving until his SUV quit.  Witnesses say they saw Campbell get into another vehicle and he left the scene.

He was arrested after coming back to his vehicle with his mother and investigators say they determined he had been driving while under the influence.

Campbell is charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated having a blood alcohol content at more than .18%, failure to submit to a breath test and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

He’s been ordered to appear in Town of Virgil Court at a later date.
