Former New York State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton is officially appealing his felony conviction on accusations that he lied to the FBI about his involvement in getting his son a job with a downstate law firm.

The Republican’s attorney filed a notice of appeal December 8 with the U.S. District Court in Westchester County but the filing did not detail the legal basis for the appeal.

The 62 year old career politician was sentenced last month to six months house arrest and fined $50,000.

Prosecutors did not recommend jail time based on statements from doctors that said Libous is not expected to survive his terminal cancer and has less than a year to live.
