The Broome County Health Department again reminds people living in older homes that money is available to help get rid of lead.

Last month, the Health Department said it was accepting applications to help property owners control lead hazards.

Last October, the department was awarded a $3.23 million federal grant to control lead paint hazards and address health issues in low income housing in the area.

The program is expected to be able to remediate at least 147 housing units throughout Broome County.

To qualify, pre-1978 constructed rental and owner-occupied properties must house at least one child under the age of six or a pregnant woman and residents must provide proof they meet Housing and Urban Development low income guidelines.

Applications for local grants are available by calling the Broome Health Department at (607) 778-2847 or online at www.gobroomecounty.com/eh/lead.
