The Kopernik Observatory and Science Center on Underwood Road in Vestal has a number of programs and sky viewings plans for Spring and Summer break.

Speaking on the April 12 edition of the weekly local public affairs, Public Program Coordinator Roy Williams says among the programs for kids is Girl Power that looks to introduce girls to science, technology, engineering and math in a fun way, including understanding the chemistry behind cosmetics.

In upcoming weeks, the observatory will host the popular Rocket Fest model rocket fest and science camps as well as programs dealing with Earth Science.

The observatory is open on clear nights for sky viewing and residents can call Kopernik in advance at (607) 748-3685 or sign up online at www.kopernik.org for Clear Sky Alerts and other notifications concerning observatory programs.

Southern Tier Close Up is heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
