A multi-million dollar project to spruce up the Wegmans store in Johnson City has been wrapped up.

Remodeling work at the 125,000-square-foot store started last April. The major elements of the job were completed a few days before Thanksgiving.

Store manager Rich Gilbert said Wegmans employees and hundreds of people who worked for contractors helped to complete the massive project on schedule.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, Gilbert said some changes were made "behind the scenes" in areas not seen by customers.

The remodeling also included moving some departments and making some significant adjustments in the way they operate.

More employees now are positioned in areas visible to customers, encouraging additional interaction with those who may have questions about the store's offerings.

Gilbert said planning for the remodeling project got underway nearly three years before the actual work started at the store.

The project included the installation of new coolers and an upgraded electrical system.

The store on Harry L Drive opened in August 1990. The Rochester-based Wegmans is marking its 100th anniversary this year. Wegmans now operates 88 stores in New York, Pennsylvania and four other states.
