Shoppers visiting the soon-to-close Toys R Us store in Johnson City may have been surprised to see signs indicating the business was hiring.

It turns out you can, indeed, apply for a job at the store on Harry L Drive near the Oakdale Mall. An employee said the location is preparing to start its clearance sale on Thursday.

Among other things, the store expects to hire some cashiers. They're willing to train people who haven't previously done that sort of work.

The Toys R Us website invites would-be employees to "be part of our future." An online listing indicates there are "sales associate" and "daytime stock associate" openings available in Johnson City.

Last week, Toys R Us announced it would liquidate the inventory in its 735 U.S. stores.

The company is advising customers that it generally will not accept coupons at the stores being closed.

It's not known how long the going-out-of-business sales will run.
