New York State Senator Fred Akshar says a lot of ground has been covered in just the first of several roundtable discussions about school safety he wants to hold.

Representatives from 29 area schools in the 52nd Senate District gathered in Binghamton  to express their concerns, including the importance of the sharing of information between law enforcement and educators about students and addressing mental health issues.

Administrators also voiced frustration about being prevented from getting a troubled student help if teachers do identify some warning signs of trouble with a student.

Akshar says he plans more School Safety Summits in the upcoming weeks.
