Fire marshal Paul Hlebica said the blaze at 20 Mildred Avenue started on a porch on the back side of the three-story building. The porch is on the third floor.

Hlebica said several adults and some children were left homeless by the fire, which was reported at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday.

Johnson City firefighters were assisted by units from the Binghamton Fire Department's Main Street station.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross was called to assist those who were forced from the three-apartment building.

Hlebica said most of the fire damage was confined to the third floor of the structure. He said everyone was out of the building by the time firefighters arrived. He said an initial report of possible entrapment was inaccurate.

Although fire investigators have determined where the fire began, Hlebica said they have not ruled on the cause. He said police detectives will conduct additional interviews as part of the investigation.
