Interstate 88 Rest Stops Reopen

Motorists will be able to take a break again on Interstate 88 between Exits 18 and 19 in Otsego County with the reopening of the Worcester rest area.  The facility had been closed for five years.

New York State Senator James Seward and DOT Commissioner Matthew Driscoll joined to  officially reopen the Worster rest area.

The Wells Bridge rest stop parking area in Unadilla in Delaware County is also open with full rehabilitation of the facilities set for next year.

New York State closed six rest areas in 2010 in a cost-saving move that was partially based on conditions of buildings and parking lots.  The state looked to save a million dollars a year in the closings.

Still, safety concerns as well as convenience for commercial and private drivers propelled a push for the reopening of Worcester and Wells Bridge.

The New York State Office of general Services is responsible for the design and construction at both facilities.
