An initial report from a group hired to study the parking situation in Downtown Binghamton is revealing unsurprising information.  Nelson/Nygaard representatives told a gathering at Metro Center that around 65%  of 965 people responding online said they don’t go downtown since they perceive parking to be inconvenient.

The consultants are primarily recommending more on-street parking and signs directing people to more off-street options.

With the closing of the Collier Street parking garage over safety issues, the off-street parking sites are more limited as well.

The count of available spaces downtown that was presented yesterday included spots that are no longer available at the Collier Street ramp.

The $100,000 study is being paid for by the City and the Binghamton Metropolitan Transportation Study.

The consultants are planning a final public meeting to present findings in January.
