School transportation officials are reminding residents of the dangers of passing stopped school buses as the region marks Operation Safe Stop Day.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation says in October of 2016 there were 37,023 illegal passes but that number grew to 54,962 last month.

February of this year saw fewer illegal passes at 34,101 but the weather and school cancellations may have contributed to the drop.

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee says the numbers clearly indicate a serious problem in the state and that children are at risk for injury or death.
