Illegal Biking Leads To Binghamton Drug Arrest
Police say a Binghamton man faces drug-related charges after officers saw him riding a bicycle on a sidewalk on the West Side. That's against the law.
Authorities say 37-year-old Rashiem Tompkins fled when police tried to stop him for violating the city ordinance prohibiting the use of a bike on a sidewalk.
Investigators say Tompkins was observed riding on the sidewalk near Main and Murray streets.
Police say a witness noticed Tompkins throwing something onto the roof of a Family Dollar store at 56 Main Street.
Officers checked out the roof and found 101 bags of suspected heroin.
Police also confiscated more than $400 in cash from Tompkins.
In addition to riding a bicycle on a sidewalk, Tompkins was charged with possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest. He also faces a count of evidence tampering.
Tompkins was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to Broome County Jail.
