After being postponed from its originally-scheduled date, it appears likely the New York State Crappie Derby will be held next week in northern Broome County.

Derby coordinator Dave Hughes says he's optimistic that the ice conditions will be adequate for the fishing tournament to take place on February 14.

Hughes says workers at Dorchester Park determined the ice on Whitney Point Lake today was 11 1/2 inches thick.

Based on the weather forecast for the next several days, Hughes expects the derby will be held.

Another ice measurement is scheduled to be done on Monday morning. Broome County parks officials will assess the ice quality and make a final determination as to whether the event can take place.

The Crappie Derby is sponsored by the Whitney Point Sportsmen's Association. Organizers say last year's event attracted about 3,500 people.
