A long-term closure is in effect on Interstate 81 north/State Route 17 west at Exit 4S in Binghamton.

Signs guide motorists to use the Broad Avenue Exit and to use Route 7 south.

The New York State Department of Transportation says the closure is needed for the construction of drainage and a new interchange ramp and is part of the on-going Prospect Mountain construction to bring State Route 17 up to Interstate status and improve traffic flow through the area.

The DOT has not indicated when the ramp construction will be complete.

Motorists are advised to be alert for slow moving traffic and sudden stops and remember fines are doubled for work zone infractions.
