Hundreds of people including a large contingent of law enforcement officers and elected officials paid respects to Officer Smith and his family during calling hours at Chase Funeral Home in Port Dickinson.

Among those attending were Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy, Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo and Broome County Executive Debra Preston.

A large number of those paying respects were uniformed police officers from all over the region.

Fellow officers in the Johnson City Police Department who had worked with Dave “DW” Smith for over a decade arrived at the funeral home early.  A squad car was parked in front of the building with a portrait of Officer Smith and red, white and blue roses on the hood.

Many officers shared hugs and stories with several relaying accounts of Smith’s smile and easy-going attitude.  Some senior officers said Smith’s death in the line of duty has served as a wake-up call to the reality of the dangers of the job.
