City officials along with officials from the United Way of Broome County, the First Ward Action Council and Broome County Land Bank have officially opened a new community center at 47 North Street.

The building had fallen into disrepair and was considered a problem property, scheduled for demolition two years ago.

Neighbors banded together to save the building and re-purpose the site as a much-needed community center.

The project is part of the First Ward Action Council’s Crandall and North Street Revitalization Project which is creating 37 new affordable housing units.

The community center project cost $768,000 and restored the building to historic standards.  The facility also contains housing units on the upper floors.
