The owner of the three-floor apartment building at 1 Mather Street is seeking approval from the city to proceed with a project to repair damage caused by a May 9 blaze.

The 27-unit structure sustained heavy damage in the early-morning fire. Parts of the roof were destroyed by the blaze. Investigators said seven apartments sustained significant damage.

A sign posted in the building indicates the owner is seeking variances from zoning code setback requirements. The public hearing is scheduled for Monday at 5:40 p.m. in the City Council chambers.

The vacant building is owned by Mather Street Realty Incorporated of Rockland County.

A property manager had previously told WNBF News that the owner expected to begin reconstruction work after insurance matters had been settled.

Another representative of the owner indicated work on the project could start this spring.

City planning department officials and representatives of the mayor's office were not available to discuss the public hearing or plans to repair the damaged building.
