National Child Abuse Prevention Month is recognized on the April 21 edition of the weekly, local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up as Broome County Family Violence Prevention Council coordinator Janette Cyganovich Brush talks about healthy families.

Many times discussions about child abuse deal with warning signs and what people should do if they suspect various forms of abuse. Brush says it is very important to know what supports strong families in order to facilitate safe children.

Brush says there are at least a half dozen protective factors for forming strong families and a safe environment for children and many of those factors can be formed and nurtured outside of the nuclear family.

More information can be found by contacting the Broome County Family Violence Prevention Council at (607) 778-2153 as well as taking advantage of resources in schools, community and faith-based organizations.

Southern Tier Close Up can be heard Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
