Gun owners will be able to turn in weapons at a buyback event that's been scheduled for this weekend in downtown Binghamton.

Organizers say $100 will be paid for an assault weapon and $75 for a handgun. They say $50 will be paid for a rifle or shotgun. $25 will be paid for a non-working or antique gun.

The event will be held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 478 at 65 Carroll Street from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m Saturday.

Guns brought to the site should be unloaded and placed in a box or a bag. Weapons may be transported in a car but organizers say they should be secured in the vehicle's trunk.

Licensed gun dealers may not participate in the program. Active or retired police officers also are ineligible for the buyback offer.

The buyback is sponsored by the New York State Attorney General's Office and the Binghamton Police Department.
