Construction is set to start on student housing facilities at SUNY Broome Community College.

Ground has finally been broken on the project that has been hotly debated for over a decade.

School officials have held the contention that having on-site housing will not only enhance the college experience for students, but will also benefit local businesses.

The $18 million dorm facility is projected to be open next year.

The not-for-profit organization, the BCC Housing Development Corporation is leasing the land on the Front Street campus in the Town of Dickinson and secured the loans for the project.

When completed, the facility will measure some 18,000 square feet and house around 340 students.
