Gillibrand Announces Plans to Run for President

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she's preparing to seek the Democratic nomination for president.

The 52-year-old Gillibrand announced her plans on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert Tuesday.

Gillibrand said she is forming an exploratory committee to run for the presidency. In recent days, people familiar with her plans had said an announcement was about to be made.

During the recording of the CBS television program in New York City, Gillibrand said "as a young mom, I'm going to fight for other people's kids as hard as I would fight for my own."

Gillibrand said she believes "healthcare should be a right and not a privilege." She also said she supports "better public schools" and better access to job training.

The junior senator from New York indicated she would take on "institutional racism" along with the "corruption and greed in Washington."
