Gas Leak Located

A strong odor of gas prompted a call to Binghamton Firefighters shortly before 9:00 a.m. November 9. The odor was detected in and around Court and Washington Streets near Ellis Brothers Furniture, M&D R Nuts and Galaxy Brewing.

Workers and residents were evacuated in that area as NYSEG personnel were called in to attempt to locate a possible leak. Workers found a gas line leak in or near the basement area of Ellis Brothers and made the necessary repairs. Leaks were also found in the basements of M&D R Nuts and Galaxy Brewing. The strongest concentration of gas was detected at Galaxy.

There were no injuries reported and people were allowed to go back to their businesses later in the morning as NYSEG worked on the problem.

Galaxy Brewing is already closed on Mondays and expected to reopen for business as usual on November 10.

NYSEG and fire crews departed from the scene around 5:00 p.m. No injuries were reported.
