Future Bearcat Leads Team To Stop-DWI Win

Future Binghamton Bearcat John Schurman scored 29 points and added 11 rebounds to lead his Fayetteville-Manlius boys basketball team to an 84-34 win over the Johnson City Wildcats last night in the opening round of the Mirabito Stop-DWI Holiday Basketball Classic at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.  He scored 23 of those points in the first half as the Hornets opened up a 43-20 advantage at the end of two quarters of play.

Schurman and the rest of the Fayetteville-Manlius starters sat for part of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter with the game out of reach for a Wildcats' comeback.  With two Binghamton University assistants in attendance the 6' 6" senior hit for the majority of his points on lay-ups and short jumpers.  He is regarded as being a highly accurate shooter from mid-range and beyond the three-point arc.

Schurman and his teammates were in attendance earlier in the day when his future team downed the Bryant Bulldogs 67-62 at the Events Center.  He had been there once before to watch this Fall's edition of "Late-Night Madness".  Schurman plans to enter the School of Business Management next school year.  He says Binghamton assistant coach Lazarus Sims, a native of the Syracuse area and past standout for the Syracuse Orange, was the one who headed the recruiting efforts for him to come to BU.

The Hornets advance to play in the Regional Division II final against Maine-Endwell on Monday night.  The Spartans advanced to the finals with an opening day victory over the Binghamton Patriots.
