Former Mayor Ryan Plans Return to Binghamton

Former Binghamton Mayor Matthew Ryan says he will be moving back to the city and will be getting involved in the local political scene.

Ryan served as mayor for eight years, from 2006 to 2013. He was prevented from running for reelection because of a term limit law.

The 65-year-old Ryan, a Democrat, now lives in Brooktondale in Tompkins County. He said he plans to relocate to Binghamton as soon as he can get out of his current lease.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the former mayor said he's not laying the groundwork for a possible bid to return to City Hall.

Ryan said although "term limits have their place," he was "sad" that he "didn't get to run a third time." He said he believed his administration accomplished a "tremendous amount" despite the economic challenges caused by the recession.

Ryan said he missed the opportunity to serve as mayor as the local economy started to improve.

Ryan isn't closing the door on the possibility of running again for mayor. He said "there's plenty of time to think about that."

Ryan said he'd prefer to see someone else challenge Republican Mayor Richard David next year. But he's made it clear that he may be interested in running again: "I'm not ruling it out."

David has indicated he expects to seek a second term in 2017.
