Murphy Smith has been selected in fan voting as an Eastern League All-Star.  Smith, in town this weekend with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, is a 2009 graduate of Binghamton University and was selected in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball Draft that spring by the Oakland Athletics.  Smith was the America East Pitcher of the year in 2009 posting a record of 7-3 and an ERA of 3.12.

After six seasons in the Oakland organization he was released by the A's and signed as a free agent last year with the Toronto Blue Jays.  After spending time in Single-A Dunedin he finished last season with New Hampshire, the Blue Jays Double-A affiliate.  This season Smith is putting together excellent statistics earning him All-Star status.

Smith appeared in relief against the Binghamton Mets on Thursday night and shut down opposing batters over the final two innings to preserve a 4-2 New Hampshire win and earn his third save of the season.  Smith now posts a 3-3 record with an ERA of 1.20 and three saves out of the bullpen for the Fisher Cats.

Smith had pitched at NYSEG Stadium, home of the Binghamton Mets, during his Binghamton Bearcats' career when he started against the UMBC Retrievers. Smith is another in a lengthy list of pitchers developed by Binghamton University head baseball coach Tim Sinicki.  Five Binghamton pitchers have been drafted by Major League teams along with numerous other pitchers and position players who have signed free agent contracts after playing under the tutelage of Sinicki.
