Flags at Binghamton City Hall are being flown at half-staff in honor of former Mayor Al Libous, who passed away June 30.

Libous was uncle to late State Senator Thomas Libous.

He was 88 years old and served as mayor for 3 terms in the 1970s. He was first elected as a city councilman for the North Side before voted in as Mayor in 1968.

Long-time residents and political colleagues remember the Republican for his wry sense of humor, ability to negotiate compromises on issues and his overall dedication to the community.

Current Mayor Richard David issued a statement saying “Mayor Libous governed during a time of great change in our community, transforming City Hall for the modern era.”  David called Libous a “truly legendary public servant who was beloved by all.”
