Forgotten Fallout Shelters Found at Watkins Glen School

The Watkins Glen Middle School custodial staff has made a historic discovery, one dating back to the Cold War.

Two forgotten nuclear fallout shelters have been discovered in the school's basement.

Library Media Specialist Maggie Field followed the custodians to the basement and says she found the facilities fully stocked with neatly stacked boxes of provisions and other emergency supplies.

Even the local emergency management director didn't know the shelters were lurking under the halls of learning for decades.

Field says she would like the district to donate some of the supplies to the local historical society and give history teachers access to the rest to be used in lessons about the Cold War.
