The man who police say fatally shot two women in a Florida yoga studio before killing himself grew up in Broome County.

According to Tallahassee.com, authorities say 40-year-old Scott Paul Beierle posed as a customer before he suddenly began shooting a handgun late Friday afternoon.

Five other people were hurt in the shooting at Hot Yoga Tallahassee. Investigators were trying to determine a motive.

Public records indicate Beierle was a 1997 Vestal High School graduate. He later graduated from Binghamton University with a bachelor's degree in political science and government.

The New York Times reported Bierele moved from Vestal to Tallahassee in 2011.

Beierle was a "Carrier of the Month" for the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin in 1997. A newspaper profile about the recognition said he had been a member of student government and was vice president of his senior class at Vestal High School.

The profile reported Beierle won an athletic student award in football and was an Eagle Scout. It indicated he had delivered newspapers in Vestal for four-and-a-half years. The profile said he "plans to continue delivering the Press while attending college."

The carrier award notice said "Scott mows lawns for neighbors and is saving his money to help with college expenses."
