The Broome County Health Department has a financial boost from New York State to focus on healthy food choices for some school districts in the area over the next five years.

Officials say the $1.2 million grant will be used to combat obesity in selected school districts in the region.

The first districts on the list for assistance under the grant are Johnson City, Binghamton, Deposit and Harpursville.

The Health Department says the grant will be used to boost the Healthy Hunger-Free Act criteria, support physical activity in districts and increase access to affordable, healthy foods.
