City of Binghamton Fire Captain Robert Parke says a woman was taken by a private party to be evaluated for possible smoke inhalation after bystanders told authorities she helped a second floor resident get out of a burning building on Glenwood Avenue at Lake Avenue in the First Ward at 12:02 a.m. April 24.

Firefighters from all of the City’s stations were on the scene of the JM Home Products building at 58 Glenwood Ave. near Sharkey’s Restaurant for about three hours.

Early reports indicate the man sleeping in a second floor apartment was the owner of the business and was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector.

He reportedly managed to get his dog out of the building but two cats died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
