Broome County Fire Coordinator Brett Chellis speaks on the October 18 edition of the local weekly public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up about National Fire Prevention Awareness Month and what residents should keep in mind to stay safe.

A big push right now is raising the funds need to replace the Broome County Firefighter Association training trailer.

The little house on wheels has seen thousands of children pass through, learning about fire prevention and how to stay under the smoke if there is a fire at their home.

The trailer's smoke machine isn't even working now.

Chellis says it's expected to cost $40,000 to get a new trailer that could be responsible for saving hundreds of lives.

Chellis also talks about cold weather fire prevention and new legislation dealing with fire retardants and the possible requirement for sprinklers in new home construction.

Southern Tier Close Up airs Saturdays at 12:10 p.m. on News Radio 1290 WNBF.
