A structure on the East Side of Binghamton sustained heavy damage as the result of an afternoon fire.

Authorities say the initial call for the blaze at 37 Bigelow Street reported a possible brush fire. That call came in at 12:57 p.m. Thursday.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered a large garage behind a house was burning. Fire units attacked the blaze from the front off Bigelow Street and from the rear of the structure off Gaylord Street.

The fire, which was near the Calvin Coolidge Elementary School, generated thick, black smoke that was visible over a large section of the city.

The blaze was brought under control quickly and fire department officials said no injuries were reported.

Neighbors said the garage was used for storage by an Endwell equipment rental business.
