A two-alarm blaze caused extensive damage to an apartment house in downtown Binghamton this afternoon.

Authorities say the fire at 26 Stuyvesant Street was reported at 2:20 p.m.

Police and fire department officials say there apparently were no injuries.

Three adults and one child were believed to have lived in the building. The American Red Cross was assisting those left homeless by the blaze.

One resident said two cats which had been in the burning building were rescued by firefighters.

The fire scene was on Stuyvesant Street between Court and Hawley streets.

Two blocks of Hawley Street near the former Columbus School were closed because of fire equipment.

Fire investigators were on the scene to begin looking for the cause of the blaze.
