An early-morning fire caused heavy damage to a vacant house in downtown Binghamton.

The blaze at 15 Tudor Street was reported shortly before 2:30 a.m.

An assistant fire chief told WNBF News the fire was spotted by a police officer. No injuries were reported.

The house was to be sold by Broome County at an auction scheduled for Saturday morning.

Fire officials believe the house had been unoccupied for more than a year. Utilities to the house had been shut off.

Although the blaze was knocked down quickly, firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to prevent the fire from reigniting.
