The Southern Tier Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting a Binghamton family following a fire that sent a mother and her eight children looking for a place to stay.

Firefighters were called to Bevier Street at 2:35 p.m. December 29 to find the first and second floors of the building in flames.

A second alarm was called and authorities say the fire quickly spread to the attic.

One child was home at the time.  There were no injuries.

Crews had to launch an external attack, unable to enter the building, due to the intensity of the blaze.

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours and, apparently, some officials went back to the site to check for hot spots

The cause is under investigation.
