Firefighter Dies After Battling Newark Valley Blaze

An Owego Fire Department captain died after fighting a house fire on Chamberlain Road in the Town of Newark Valley.

Authorities say 34-yesr-old that Matthew Porcari was injured when a floor collapsed in the burning building. He was pronounced dead at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

  Another fireman, Daniel Gavin, has been transported to a Syracuse hospital with burns and injuries suffered battling the blaze.

The occupants of the house escaped safely.  About a half-dozen fire departments battled the fire for several hours.  The blaze  was reported around 10:45 Monday night.  Efforts to control the blaze were hampered by the extreme cold which caused icing problems.
