An historic building in Conklin is in ruins following a blaze that drew a half dozen fire departments October 30.

Firefighters were called to old schoolhouse on Banta Road in Conklin that was built in the 1800s at around 6:45 p.m.

The two residents in the house escaped and were taken to Binghamton General Hosptial for observation, but were not seriously hurt.

Officials say they believe the fire started in the general area of the kitchen and quickly spread up to the attic.

Investigators say the cause will probably never be known as the building was essentially destroyed by the fire and will be torn down.
