A complaint has been filed against a Waverly company that breeds dogs and cats for research purposes.

Ohio-based Stop Animal Exploitation NOW is seeking federal fines and revocation of Liberty Research Incorporated’s license to breed animals.

An inspection in March of last year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture cited Liberty for several violations including improper ventilation for two dogs that were being transported to a research facility.  Both dogs died.

Company officials say Liberty corrected all issues raised in the USDA report and follows strict guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of the animals.

Liberty has 17 buildings on 14 acres on Route 17C in Waverly.  Records show the company, employing roughly 5 dozen workers, has been in business for 40 years, breeding what its website says is anti-body defined felines and canines for research.

The animals are used for development of veterinary products and the business is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
