The 49-year-old Fiala appeared before Binghamton City Court Judge Carol Cocchiola this morning, one week after he was arrested following the collision on Clinton Street.

In addition to the misdemeanor driving while intoxicated charge, Fiala pleaded guilty to moving from a lane unsafely.

Fiala was fined $500 and assessed a $395 court surcharge. Cocchiola revoked Fiala's driver license for six months and ordered the installation of an interlock device in any vehicle he uses in the future.

The sentence also included a one-year conditional discharge.

City police who investigated the hit-and-run crash said the bicyclist who was struck sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment.

Fiala was taken into custody a short time later at his Stanley Street home.

Fiala's attorney, Jon Blechman, says he believes his client was treated as any other person would be in similar circumstances.

Fiala's mother is Barbara Fiala, the commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and a former Broome County executive.

Anthony Fiala, a Democrat, is running for a second term on the county legislature. He is being challenged by Republican Karl Bernhardsen.
