It's not yet known whether any of the five Radio Shack stores in Broome County will be among those closed by the company.

The Texas-based retailer Tuesday announced plans to close up to 1,100 of its "underperforming" retail locations.

There are Radio Shack stores in Binghamton, Endicott, Johnson City, Vestal and the town of Chenango.

Radio Shack's decision to close about 20 percent of its stores follows a review of operations conducted over the past few months.

Radio Shack management has been assessing locations based on sales and lease details. Officials haven't said when a complete store closing list will be made public.

The company has launched a turnaround plan in an effort to bring new life into a well-known name in electronics retailing.
