Cortland County Sheriff’s officials say one of the occupants of a car that hit a guide rail on Interstate 81 north in the Town of Cortlandville at 2:36 a.m. April 9 is dead after getting out of the car and being hit by another vehicle.

Authorities say the driver of the Kia Optima lost control of the car just south of the off ramp in Homer and hit the guide rail on the left side.

All four occupants of the Kia got out of the car and the second car hit the Kia with one of the people who had been in the Kia being killed.  The others, including the driver of the Ford Mustang, were evaluated at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.

The investigation continues.

The names of those involved are not being released pending notification of family.

Interstate 81 north was closed between exits 11 and 12 for about 10 hours.
