Dollar General's newest store in the Binghamton area has opened its doors.

The business at 7146 Route 434 in Apalachin had a "soft opening" a few days ago. It's expected to hold its grand opening soon.

The store went into operation about four months after construction crews started work on the town of Owego site. It's located just west of Exit 66 off Route 17.

The Dollar General store is about one-half mile away from a Family Dollar store that's been open for several years.

Dollar General already operates several stores in Broome and Tioga counties. The company has continued its rapid growth across the United States at a time many retailers have been closing stores.

The Vestal Zoning Board of Appeals last February acted to clear the way for a possible Dollar General store project on a four-and-a-half acre site on West Sheedy Road.

Although the board approved a variance to permit the store to be built with fewer parking spaces than required under existing town regulations, no work has been done on the site.
